Wheel balancing corrects uneven weight distribution around a wheel and tyre assembly. Even a small imbalance — as little as a few grams — can cause noticeable vibration, particularly at motorway speeds. Left unaddressed, imbalanced wheels accelerate tyre wear, put strain on wheel bearings and suspension components, and make driving noticeably less comfortable.
Key Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing
The most common symptom is a vibration felt through the steering wheel, seat or floor at speeds above around 50mph. The vibration often increases and then decreases as speed changes. You may also notice unusual tyre wear patterns — cupping or scalloping of the tread surface is a telltale sign of wheel imbalance. If your steering wheel vibrates but the ride is otherwise smooth, the imbalance is likely in the front wheels. Vibration mainly in the seat or floor suggests a rear wheel issue.
When Does Wheel Imbalance Occur?
Wheels can go out of balance gradually through normal use as the tyre wears, or suddenly following an impact — hitting a pothole, kerbing a wheel or even a significant speed bump. A lost balancing weight, which can fall off a rim, will also immediately cause imbalance. Tyres should ideally be rebalanced every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or whenever you notice vibration symptoms.
Our Mobile Wheel Balancing Service
Our technicians carry state-of-the-art portable balancing equipment that works to the same tolerance as fixed workshop machines. We remove each wheel, mount it on the balancing machine, identify where weight needs to be added, and fit precision balancing weights. The whole process typically takes 20 to 30 minutes per axle. We can carry out balancing anywhere in Glasgow or Bradford as a standalone service or alongside new tyre fitting.
